Appleby College Admissions Requirements
Oakville, Ontario
Entry Requirements by Grade
Appleby College begins in Grade 7 and continues through Grade 12. Its Middle School comprises Grades 7 and 8, Upper School comprises Grades 9 and 10, and Senior School comprises Grades 11 and 12. Boarding is available beginning in Grade 9. Appleby's published admissions information does not designate specific grades as "major entry years."
| Entry Level | Admissions Assessment | Other Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 7 | Kira Talent online assessment | Confidential school report, report cards and possible admissions interview |
| Grades 8 and 9 | Kira Talent online assessment | Confidential school report, report cards and possible admissions interview |
| Grades 10 to 12 | Kira Talent online assessment | Confidential school report, report cards and possible admissions interview |
Appleby's current application checklist requires applicants to complete a Kira Talent online assessment. The school does not publish the question types, subjects, duration or scoring structure of this assessment on its public admissions page.
Entrance Assessment
Unlike several other independent schools, Appleby's public admissions materials do not describe a traditional mathematics and literacy entrance test. Instead, applicants are invited to complete an online assessment through Kira Talent after submitting their application.
Appleby does not publicly provide a detailed syllabus or sample questions for the Kira Talent component. Families should therefore avoid assuming that it follows an SSAT-style academic test format.
Additional English-language testing may apply to non-native English speakers. Appleby asks applicants in Grades 7 to 9 to provide a TOEFL Junior test date where applicable, while applicants in Grades 10 to 12 may provide TOEFL or IELTS information. Duolingo is currently accepted as an alternative when these assessments are unavailable.
Admissions Process
Applicants complete an online application and then receive an applicant checklist. Required materials include:
a confidential school report completed by a teacher, principal or guidance counsellor;
proof of age;
previous and current report cards; and
the Kira Talent online assessment.
Applicants may also be contacted for an admissions interview. Appleby indicates that it prefers an in-person interview when possible, although virtual interviews may be arranged when distance makes an in-person meeting difficult.
Key Insights
Appleby's admissions assessment is different from the traditional entrance tests used by many other schools. The school's published process uses a Kira Talent online assessment rather than publicly describing a separate math and literacy exam.
Grade 7 is Appleby's first point of entry. Appleby's academic program begins with Middle School in Grade 7. Boarding becomes available beginning in Grade 9.
Previous school performance and school feedback are formally part of the application. Appleby requires report cards and a confidential school report completed by the applicant's current school.
