Entry Requirements by Grade

The Bishop Strachan School (BSS) has dedicated admissions processes for Junior Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 4, Grade 6, Grade 7 and Grade 9. Applicants may also apply to other grades when space is available.

Entrance Assessment

For Grades 1 through 6, BSS uses math and English assessments together with group activities and games. The school describes its assessment process as evaluating applicants' numeracy, literacy and interpersonal skills.

For Grades 7 and 9, applicants complete an age-appropriate math assessment and a written task based on a reading passage. BSS states that the assessment is designed to evaluate numeracy, literacy and interpersonal skills.

BSS does not publish a detailed test syllabus, number of questions, assessment length or complete sample test on its current admissions pages. The school states that applicants do not need to study or prepare anything in advance.

Admissions Process

Applicants complete an online application and submit supporting documentation, including school report cards and identification documents. BSS also asks applicants and parents to complete questionnaires as part of the online application.

BSS does not require or accept recommendation letters or teacher references as part of its application process.

For Grades 7 and 9, an Enrolment Associate meets with the applicant individually to learn about her background, interests, goals and ideas. Family members then join the interview and have an opportunity to discuss BSS and ask questions.

Key Insights

BSS does not require the SSAT. Applicants entering any grade complete the school's own admissions assessment instead. Applicants living outside the Greater Toronto Area may complete a virtual assessment.

The Grade 7 and Grade 9 assessment combines math with reading and writing. Applicants complete an age-appropriate math assessment and a written response based on a reading passage.

Interpersonal skills are explicitly part of the assessment. BSS states that its admissions assessment is designed to evaluate numeracy, literacy and interpersonal skills, rather than academic performance alone.
